Dance Clone v0.5 – Wii

Here is a small update to Dance Clone.

I made some changes to that new score page (the one that you see when you complete a song) and now it actually records your high score for each difficulty mode of each song. Those recorded high scores also gets displayed at the difficulty selection screen.

The scoring system is different from how it is in the official DDR games and StepMania. You get 7 points for every step that you get a good rating for, 10 points for every step you get perfect with and you get extra points equal to however long your longest combo was. Your final score though is a percentage based on how many points you got out of how many points you could have gotten.

It might seem like a pointless feature but something else that is new is that you can now fully navigate the home menu and the in game menu using multiple wiimotes. When it comes to actually playing the game though you still use the dpad on the first wiimote, a classic controller connected to the first wiimote or a gamecube controller or dance pad plugged into the first gamecube controller port.

Aside from that its just small fixes and things. Not much has changed.

This looks OK, and I would like to try it but I don’t own a white play station 2 with a wireless controller and 6axis (a “wii” as you call it.), do you know of any good “wii” emulators for windows?

  2. catuliwwii says:

thanks for your job but it be good add dwi support files for have songs packs from stepmania, sm files not working all

  3. miquel7000 says:

im srry but it still didnt work by me its still all the same for me black screen crash with all the games from this website T.T i wanted to play it so badly

    • thatotherdev says:

What is your SD cards file system? I don’t know if it matters but mine is FAT32 and I haven’t actually tested it with anything else.

Could you try running the game off of something else like a USB flash drive?

  4. Cid2mizard says:

The alternate skin is better, you should definitely integrate in a future version !

    • thatotherdev says:

Yeah. I like the idea of only using graphics that I made myself but the alternate skin definitely does look nicer. I probably will include it in place of the original default skin for the next version of the game.

  5. smashdude says:

So this site has song downloads too? I am new to this site and know very little about this site.

    • thatotherdev says:

There aren’t any songs on this site. I made Dance Clone but aside from the one included song I’m not providing any other music for it at the moment. Go to google and look for step mania songs.

      • smashdude says:

ok. Have you been receiving this code dumping errors that I have been getting too when trying to “import stepmat” for 99% of the songs on the wii version? How have you manipulated this problem? I am still stuck on how to do it on the PC version since I am new to this.

      • thatotherdev says:

I am aware of the problem on Wii. The PC version works exactly the same as it does on Wii. It doesn’t crash but using it is exactly the same.

  6. AnotherGuy says:

    A couple questions:
Do you plan to release the source for this?
Is there a program to create custom step charts or do we have to do it all by notepad?
How does the importing chart work?
    Thanks

    • thatotherdev says:

I haven’t released the source code for it yet. I’m not particularly proud of it (or really anything I’ve written come to think of it) and I don’t really want to just make it openly available. Do you want it to learn from it, port it, or improve it? In any case I suppose I could email it to you if you want it.

There isn’t an editor yet. From within the game you can select a bpm rate, starting and ending poitn and have it randomly place steps. But if you want to have exact control over step placement then you need to either make it with step mania and import it or do it manually using a text editor like notepad.

to import a song you place the music file (mp3) and the step mania file (sm) in the music folder. then when your at the song selection screen just select the song (it lists all mp3s in the music folder). at the following screen click the button labeled “import step chart”. This will bring you to another screen which will list all of the sm files in the music folder. Just select the sm file that goes along with the music file you had previously selected. It will then generate a dc (that is the dance clone step chart format) based on the selected sm file and will give it the correct filename to associate it with selected mp3 file.

Its incomplete but thats how you use it.

  7. smashdude says:

He released the source I believe on the mainpage. On the menu screen of the app it says “import stepmat’ and I click on that for every song but it gives me an code dumping error message.

  8. smashdude says:

Ok then can you please link me the PC version of this app since I don’t have it installed on my PC yet? Where do I put it once I download it? Desktop? Then double click and try importing songs there then copying it to the wii? I still don’t understand why my wii reads code dumping errors when I ty to import the corresponding songs. Can you please explain this to me. Very few if any work.

  11. smashdude says:

So is this version up and ready so ALL songs can work? I really want to play them. And stepmania doesn’t even listen to my clasic rock requests since they hate classic rock. Except for Queen.

    • thatotherdev says:

Its the same version that has been available for over a month and the one that you presumably have already tested. It works but only with music in mp3 format and on Wii it crashed when importing certain stepmania tracks.

  12. Beau says:

This file has been removed from the server, because the file has not been accessed in a long time.

Just thought I would let you know. I’ll check if it is on Homebrew Browser.

    • thatotherdev says:

Thanks. It seems to have been taken down from rapidshare and hotfile. But the megaupload, deposit file, zshare and uploading mirrors all seem to still be up. Thats the point of multiupload. It posts the file at multiple different places so you can choose where to get it from and if it gets taken down from some of them its still available at others.

But anyways yeah it should still be available in the homebrew browser. Aside from replacing homebrew with more recent versions I don’t think anything has ever been removed from it.

  13. smashdude says:

Which songs have worked for you? Link me please. I am dying to dance to some good ol classic rock songs. I want YYZ by Rush. I have the song for Frets on Fire but Dance Clone keeps on giving me code dumpings for the song. Please fix and help PLEASE. And link me to song downloads that have worked for you please.

  14. macrimichele says:

I just tried your game on my Wii and its fantastic, but unfortunatelly I couldn’t play much with it because I don’t have a DDR mat but a Family Trainer mat and so the buttons are just wrong. Would it be possible for you to send me the source code in order to remap the buttons for use with Family Trainer mat?

    • thatotherdev says:

Does the Family Trainer mat work with any homebrew games? I assumed it was a USB device (it is USB isn’t it?) and would require some special drivers or something to get input from it. But I don’t have my own to test with. If its being treated as a standard keyboard, gamecube controller, wiimote or something like that then I can add support for it myself if you tell me what buttons to map to what direction.

If you want to do it yourself though I’ll send you the source code. Just leave your email address.

  15. smashdude says:

Does this app work with the wii yet or not? Have you tried it?

    • macrimichele says:

Yes it works, but I had to disconnect the mat before starting the game and fter the game loaded I reconnected and it worked.

  16. macrimichele says:

It is being treated as a gamecube controller because I tested it even with NES emulator and it worked just with the same wrong buttons as it worked on Dance Clone, so I guess the FAmily Trainer mat has just a different buttons map respect to a standard gamecube controller. I can tell you what is the actual button map on the map referred to the gamecube controller if you like.
    PS: My e-mail: macrimichele@yahoo.com

    • thatotherdev says:

OK then just let me know what game cube buttons to map to what directions in the game. Or do you still want me to email you the source code?

      • macrimichele says:

Thank you for answering! Tonight when I get home I will make a complete map of how my mat buttons map to the buttons of the gamecube controller. And if I’m not abusing of your patience you can compile it again for me, or you can send me the source code and I’ll try to compile until all the buttons are in the right way and then resend the modified source code to you. Which one is the easiest way for you?
        macrimichele@yahoo.com

        • thatotherdev says:

My patience can take some abuse. If anything I would prefer to make the edits and compile it again my self. To be honest I’m a bit embarrassed by how poorly written the code is lol.

          • macrimichele says:

Then I will try to make a buttons map as correct as possible in order to make things easy for you (since you are doing me a favor). Thank you for your patience! Michele

  17. smashdude says:

Should I redownload the app then? So far I have gotten very few of the step mania songs to download. All of them read code dumpings. Which songs work for you?

    • macrimichele says:

I have just tried with the song that came with the game because I don’t have DDR mat but a Family Trainer mat. I will try other songs as soon as I solve the problems with my mat button map.

  18. smashdude says:

Alright please link me the songs that you have tried that do work.

  19. smashdude says:

I use the wii mote and dance pad. You can email me the codes and songs that work. I use the homebrew channel if you know what that is.

  20. smashdude says:

I am trying songs from steomania and bemainstyle. Try those please and tell me if they work.

  21. smashdude says:

The game works with the wii mote perfectly. Nice to see a girl here who can program and format music songs. I just need to know which songs, if any, are compatible with the application and don’t give me code dumpings. Michele, do you use the dance clone application from the homebrew channel or if not, what application do you use and where do you load it from?

    • macrimichele says:

I tried with some stepmania songs and steps and the application doesn’t even start if a .sm file is present in the music folder. So, I guess you were right that couldn’t import stepmania songs into Dance Clone. I think there is a bug in the application when it finds a .sm file. I am here if help is needed: beta testing or other things!

  22. smashdude says:

Added you on yahoo. So I assume you have the homebrew channel on the wii right? No songs work for you yet on that app?

    • macrimichele says:

Yes I have the homebrew channel and in order to have Dance Clone work I launch it from the homebrew channel with mat unconnected, after the application starts, I connect the mat. But as I said if a .sm file is present in the music folder Dance clone doesn’t launch whatever I do (I don’t even get a dump screen)

      • macrimichele says:

I forgot to say that i added some people to yahoo too, but I don’t know which of them is you because the names were different from them on this site.

  23. smashdude says:

Mine is smashdude73. And also I believe you have to extract the songs before you can play them. I need some extractor tool to make it work. WinRAR gives me code dumpings.

    • macrimichele says:

You can try with 7zip forcing it to open the archive (it’s just a zip file with modified extension). You can’t play the songs that are in the archive because it is ogg format and not mp3 format, you have to convert it first to mp3. I was not lucky with the step files because Dance clone doesn’t load if you place an sm file into music folder.

  24. smashdude says:

Try bemainstyle.com I got some songs to work and I did get the rick roll song to work from stepmania. And they told me in order for the songs to load they need to have a SM file in it. Mime just reads code dumpings. I really want mr roboto by styx to work as well heat of the moment by asia. And some taylor swift songs. Please link me to the extractor program you are referring to.

  25. smashdude says:

Alright thanks. I will talk to you on yahoo if I can. I added you.

  26. macrimichele says:

    Hi,
I’m here again. So,I tried other songs from bemain style and none of them worked because Dance Clone crashes but I found a workaround to importing stepmania songs into Dance Clone.
    1) Open the .smzip downloaded from stepmania with 7zip and extract it to a folder into your PC.
    2) Then convert the .ogg file that you find inside into a .mp3 file using “Ogg to mp3 converter” (Download it at http://www.oggtomp3converter.com/)
    3) Download Dance Clone for Windows and unzip it into your PC.
    4) Copy the .mp3 song and the .sm file from the stepmania folder where you extracted the .smzip file into the Music folder of Dance clone for windows.
    5) Start Dance clone for windows and import the step file from there.
    6) After all of this you will find the .mp3 file with the song and the .dc file with the steps in the music folder of Dance Clone in your PC, the last thing to do is to copy these 2 files into the music folder of Dance Clone for Wii and you can play them.

    To thatotherdev:
I downloaded the Devkitppc and compiled a little program in order to have a exact button map from gamecube controller and my family trainer mat and now I have but since the buttons map is very messed up will you please send me the source code and I’ll try to remap the buttons and compile the game myself?!
    (my e-mail: macrimichele@yahoo.com)

  27. smashdude says:

Thanks. Do I need download for windows? I don’t have that link yet but I do have the one for wii. Add me on yahoo please. You use the homebrew channel too right?

  28. macrimichele says:

The windows version linked on this site:
    http://www.multiupload.com/OR4DIDH5IZ

Please send me an e-mail to add you on Yahoo.

If you follow my little tutorial above you can use all the songs you like on Dance Clone.

  29. smashdude says:

Add me on messenger. Smashdude73. Bemainstyle songs won’t work for these?

  30. smashdude says:

Alright I think I made a typo when adding you on messenger. I’m smashdude73. Add me if you can please. Added you. Trying to work this dance clone app out. I want classic rock songs mostly and a few pop/punk.

  31. smashdude says:

Added you on yahoo that is.

  32. zobiro says:

hi, could you please post here the family trainer mat buttons maping to gc controller? Or at least please send it to my (yahoo) email, same id as posting name. Thanx.

  33. abriyuigv says:

Those recorded high scores also gets displayed at the difficulty selection screen. Your final score though is a percentage based on how many points you got out of how many points you could have gotten. For now though if you really want to get DWI step files into Dance Clone then you need to use StepMania to convert the DWI files into SM ones that Dance Clone can then import and convert into usable DC files.
